1. How much does flooring cost per square foot in Sri Lanka?
Ceramic or vitrified tiles cost Rs 600 to Rs 1,200 per square foot supplied and laid, laminate Rs 450 to Rs 950, granite or terrazzo Rs 1,100 to Rs 2,600, and engineered or solid timber Rs 1,200 to Rs 3,500. A plain titanium or cement finish is cheapest at Rs 200 to Rs 450.
2. Is laminate flooring suitable for Sri Lanka?
Only in dry, well-ventilated rooms above ground level. Sri Lankan humidity and monsoon flooding swell laminate at the joints, and once a board lifts it cannot be repaired in place. For bathrooms, kitchens, verandahs and ground floors prone to damp, tile or stone is the safer choice.
3. Do I need to level the floor before laying?
Usually yes if you are removing an old finish. Screed levelling costs about Rs 90 to Rs 220 per square foot and is what prevents hollow, cracking tiles and creaking laminate. A fitter who skips it to win the quote will cost you the whole floor later.

5. How long before I can walk on a new floor?

Laminate can usually be walked on immediately but should acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before laying, which matters more in Sri Lankan humidity than in a dry climate.
